Take the taste of the Mediterranean home with you with recipes featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and time-honoured cooking methods. From time to time we’ll bring you one of our favourite local recipes.

The Costa del Sol, located along the Mediterranean coast of southern Spain, is rich in diverse marine life. Here are some of the tastiest fish commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea around this region:

Sardines (Sardina pilchardus): A staple in the local diet, often grilled as "espetos" on the beach.

Anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus): Widely used in Andalusian cuisine, especially in dishes like "boquerones en vinagre" (marinated anchovies).

Sea Bream (Sparus aurata): Known locally as "dorada," this fish is popular for grilling and baking.

Red Mullet (Mullus surmuletus) Known for its delicate flavour and often fried or grilled.

Mackerel (Scomber scombrus): Another fish commonly grilled, it has a rich, oily texture.

Hake (Merluccius merluccius): Popular in various dishes, including "pescaito frito" (fried fish).

Tuna (Thunnus spp.): Particularly in summer, bluefin tuna is caught off the coast and is a prized ingredient.

Gilt-head Bream (Sparus aurata): Similar to sea bream, it's highly valued and often grilled or baked.

John Dory (Zeus faber): Known for its firm flesh and unique flavour, often prepared simply to highlight its taste.

Octopus (Octopus vulgaris): Although not a fish, octopus is a common catch and is used in many traditional dishes, like "pulpo a la gallega."

These fish form the backbone of many traditional dishes in the Costa del Sol, contributing to the region's rich and varied culinary heritage.
